The Workspace
Overview
MasterFile provides a tabbed workspace within which you organize all your cases.
When you start Notes, you first see the Workspace tab, which you can also open from its corresponding icon on the Notes bookmark bar to its left.
Each case is a self-contained file represented by its icon on the workspace and each tab can be used to organize case by whatever criteria you prefer - alphabetically, by type, year whether active or dormant, etc. Icons can be dragged like any Windows icon.
To move multiple cases, while holding the shift key down, select their icons and before releasing the shift key, drag them to the new spot or to a new tab's title.
To rename a tab, right click on it and choose Workspace Properties.
To create a new tab to the left of an existing tab, right click on it and choose Create Workspace Page.
The following dialog appears where you can enter the Tab's name.
Default icons and cases
On the workspace, icons represent cases and present status and information.
- The MasterFile Template which is used to create new case databases and perform certain administrative functions. A case exists as one database file which everything to do with that case - evidence, facts, issues, chronological items, timelines, work product, notes and argument, as well as tracking production.
- Two cases unique to this user; since the icons show 'Local' these cases reside only on the user's laptop or tablet.
- Two cases that reside on a MasterFile server (dom-t1700 in this case); users with appropriate rights can work on them simultaneously.
- Note the small arrow on JLC v BCH's icon. Click the arrow to see replica information. In this instance, both a local and server replica of this case exist. You can work on-line using the server replica or off-line using the local replica in which case synchronization happens automatically once you're on-line.
